The Curse of Elder Hymas (and other crazy adventures from the MTC)

Hey everybody,

First of all, I wanted to tell everybody that I love you, and I think and pray for you all the time.

I'll start with a quick overview about the MTC, then I'll break into some good stories.

I love being in a triple. Both my two companions and I are going to the same mission, we have very similar personalities, and we get along very well. I love them both dearly. I live in a house with four other bedrooms, composed of different companionships from my Branch here. It's crazy fun. I'm friends with just about everybody, and I really enjoy it.

I wish I had more time to write everybody individually. I hate that I don't. I definitely don't have enough time to do emails justice.

The schedule is pretty packed. It's a 16 hour workday, and it's very hard, but I love it. It makes me so happy. I can feel the spirit here so strongly, and I'm learning the language really well.

The food is good. I've always liked Mexican food, so thats really good. the people here are kind, and I love it here so much.

Now, onto some stories.

So my original companion left about four days into the MTC. His name is Elder Hymas. Ever since Elder Hymas left, things went horribly wrong. The night after he left, all water pressure to my house stopped. I didn't have running water whatsoever. Clothes went moldy in the washing machines. People couldnt shower or brush their teeth. The toilets didn't flush (everybody learned of this only after using the bathroom). Needless to say, in about fifteen minutes, the house was completely rank. We went an entire night without running water.

The next day, the water was fixed, but that was only the beginning. There is only one door into the house, and it is controlled by key cards. That day, all key cards broke to my house. Nobody could get in. All 23 of us (after failing countless times to enter the house) went to HQ and explained the problem. They gave us a master key to get in the house... and that didn't work either. So all of us knelt down outside the the front door, gathered in a circle, and said a prayer. The spirit was so strong. Upon finishing, we all got up, went back to the door, and.... it still didnt work. We were suprised at first, but this actually turned into a testimony building experience. Faith without works is dead, and that couldn't have been more prevalent than that night. We then climbed onto the roof of our house, but couldn't get in that way either. Afterwards, we went back to HQ, and they gave us key cards for a separate room. This was a good plan, but a failed plan, because none of us would have clean clothes, pjs, towels or toothbrushes or soap, etc. So, as a last ditch attempt, we found a dime that Elder Hobbs had (for some reason), used it to unscrew a window screen, and literally broke into our own house. It was so funny. I think it was probably the first time in Mexico City MTC history that an entire branch broke into their own house. We then screwed back in the window, and went to bed. Our door was fixed the next morning. Sometimes the Lord doesn't answer our prayers then and there. We have to work, even if we have to go all the way to Plan Z. But if we do, the Lord will always provide a way.

These series of events have now been named the Curse of Elder Hymas by everybody in my branch.

I miss everyone, and I hope you guys are doing okay. I have more funny stories for next week, but unfortunately, I am out of time.

With love,
Elder William Jacob Long

First Week-ish

Hey everybody!

Okay, for starters, I miss you guys so much. I really love you all and I pray for you guys constantly. It's crazy here. It is the biggest city I have ever seen. No contest. It's super beautiful though. I love every minute of it, and I am loving the people.

So I got my companion. He's an awesome guy named Elder Hymas. I loved him dearly. but he had really bad health issues, and he left after only being here for three days. I felt so bad for him, so that was really tough. But I got put into a threesome with my two other roommates, and it has been so much fun. So my current companions are named Elder Child and Elder Chischilli. I love them both dearly.

The language is coming along, slowly but surely. Its so hard. It is so freaking hard. But I'm getting it, and I really can testify that the gift of tongues works wonders. I was here just in time for independence day. We had a massive celebration in the gym, where we got to watch all sorts of native dances. The culture here is amazing. the Mexicans are so proud of it, and I can see why. It's incredible and extremely rich.

Earlier today, I got to go to the Mexico city temple and do Endowment sessions. It is honestly the strongest I have felt the spirit in my life, except for when I did my live ordinances. There were angels in that room with us. I know that there were. And I missed you guys there. It's a gorgeous temple. It looks like an Aztec temple.

It is so cool.

I love everybody, and I am praying about you guys, individually, every night.

Love,
Elder Long

PS sorry its not a crazy long letter, but my schedule got messed up with the temple trip. So expect more next week, including photos. I might write letters too. I love you guys.
